Facilitating Recycling, Dignity & Development

The Clean Trade Story

We (Elaine Stanley and Tia-Mari Jacobs) shared a dream: to make our town a little cleaner and to feed people in need. The idea came from a very dear friend whom we lost tragically in 2021. After a cup of coffee on a stoep, we decided to bring her idea to life.

We had no background in community development, no funding, and no clear path forward. Only determination and heart. We sat on the idea for a few years, planning, doing research and more planning…

Eventually in September 2024, Clean Trade was born!

Our Impact

In November, we collected and sorted nearly 5.6 tons (5,555kg) of recyclable materials.
Of this, over 2.26 tons were plastic bottles.
We served 366 traders, an average of 91 traders per trading day.
52% were female and 48% male;
98% of them are unemployed.
Everyone left with groceries for a good meal and many with even more.
Due to the huge demand, we’ve had to limit the number of traders to 80 and the number of bags per trader to 20 bags per trading day.

The need is massive!
